DSA Stands for Digital Subtraction Angiography (DSA).

DSA helps detect blood flow problems in the brain’s blood vessels by providing images of the vessels.

In this procedure, an interventional neurologist inserts a catheter (a thin tube) into an artery in the groin or leg and passes it up to the blood vessel in the brain. The doctor also injects a contrast dye through the catheter and takes X-ray images of the blood vessels in the brain.

Indications for DSA include thrombectomy, endovascular embolization, arterial stenting, arterial balloon angioplasty, and endovascular aneurysm repair.

Carotid arteries are the main arteries that supply blood to the brain. When they are clogged with plaque (fatty deposits), the blood supply to the brain is blocked or slowed down. This condition is known as carotid artery disease. It can lead to a brain stroke.

An interventional neurologist performs a carotid stenting or carotid angioplasty procedure to restore the blood flow to the brain. Carotid stenting involves the placement of a metal coil (stent) in the clogged artery to open it and decrease the chances of narrowing. The procedure is performed using a catheter.

Mechanical thrombectomy is a minimally invasive procedure to remove a blood clot from an artery or vein. The procedure helps in restoring blood flow to the brain or other vital organs. It helps in dramatically reducing the risk of brain stroke and permanent disability.
